Project Location

Project Background
A planning study was completed in 2017 and identified that Westbound SR 273 within the project area experiences heavy recurring congestion during the weekday AM and PM peak hours. This is due to the large volume of traffic weaving within a short distance between the Southbound I-95 exit ramp and the intersection at Harmony Road. The improvements from this project are expected to significantly reduce this congestion and reduce the high frequency of crashes in this weaving area.
Additionally, to minimize overall disruption and impacts to motorists, DelDOT will use the construction of the SR 273 and I-95 Interchange Improvements Project as an opportunity to simultaneously perform pavement & rehabilitation work on several of the ramps and bridges of the I-95 / SR 273 interchange, rather than performing that work separately and causing additional construction-related traffic impacts.
Project Overview
The HSIP NCC, SR 273 and I-95 Interchange Improvements project will realign two existing ramp connections to improve safety and traffic capacity:
- The exit ramp from Southbound I-95 to Westbound SR 273
- The exit ramp from Northbound I-95 to Westbound SR 273
Other interchange improvements within the project scope include:
- Pavement widening of Westbound SR 273 to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and decrease congestion.
- Pavement patching on SR 273 to repair existing cracks and deficiencies within the pavement layers.
- Resurfacing of the entire interchange and ramps to refresh the top layer of pavement.
- Replacement of curb and guardrail throughout the interchange to enhance driver safety.
- Replacement of high mast lighting throughout the interchange and on I-95.
- Replacement of overhead sign structures on I-95 to meet current Delaware traffic safety standards.
- Installation of a new stormwater management facility within the interchange.
- Bridge deck patching and resurfacing of the SR 273 Bridge over I-95 (Bridge 1-715).
