Christiana — The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces to motorists that Route 273 and I-95 Interchange Improvement Project will begin on March 15, 2021. Motorists can anticipate nighttime lane and shoulder closures on weekdays on Route 273 and I-95 Northbound/Southbound from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., pending weather.
This project will consist of the following: Two ramps will be realigned onto Route 273 westbound (one from I-95 Southbound and I-95 Northbound); installation of a new traffic signal at the new ramp from I-95 Southbound and creating at STOP controlled movement from I-95 Northbound. Multiple ramps along the interchange will be upgraded to become Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) compliant and road patching will be done on Route 273.
Route 273 westbound is currently two lanes going over I-95 with a short auxiliary lane between the on-ramp from I-95 Northbound to the off-ramp on I-95 Southbound. This project will carry three lanes across I-95 to help alleviate the traffic. This project will also address the safety and operational issues from the I-95 off ramp being close to Harmony Road.
The contractor, A-Del Construction Company, Inc. submitted a bid of $11,754,456.24, the lowest of five bids received. The contract was awarded to A-Del Construction Company, Inc. on December 31, 2020.
The contract time for this project is 446 calendar days with 73 weather days.
Variable message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the upcoming lane closures. This project has five phases. Traffic alerts will be sent out to notify motorists of any upcoming ramp closures with detours.
